CS:GO Skin Sells for Over $1,000 Because it Resembles Genitals

What You Need to Know

  • A CS:GO skin sold for over $1,400 for one...reason.
  • Players believe that the skin, a 909 Kami Five-SeveN, resembles genitals.
  • While it's not uncommon to see CS:GO skins being sold for large sums of money, other Kami variants only cost around $1, making them an absurd profit margin.
  • The prices of CS:GO skins have been slowly increasing since Valve announced Counter-Strike 2, a Source 2-focused redesign for the game that will arrive in the summer of 2023.

Most players flock to Valve's Counter-Strike: Global Offensive for its sublime gameplay, as it's often considered one of the best PC games of all time for competitive shooter fans. But some end up sticking around because of the incredibly lucrative market for tactical shooter weapon skins. For various reasons, the player community considers certain types of skins much more valuable than others and as a result, it's not uncommon to see these items sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Recently, however, one skin sold for over $1,400 for one...reason.

This skin is based on a pattern for the Five-SeveN weapon called "Kami," which can generate 1000 variations of different decorative patterns. Various Kami models are popular among players, but one, the 909 model to be exact, is considered particularly special and valuable. The reason why? Fans think that it looks like a certain part of female anatomy.

A community member looking to trade several of these specific variations of the Kami skin called pops announced the sale on Twitter, confirming that the skin was bought for €1300, or around US$1434. In particular, this specific 909 Kami Five-SeveN has an incredibly low float value of only 0.009, making it the third most pristine skin variant in the world.

The person who bought the skin is Leafy, an avid CS:GO "crafter" or someone who adds rare stickers to prized skins. Leafy then decorated the skin with four Cloud9 G2A Holo Katowice 2015 stickers, each of which normally sells for around $350. This means that overall, this craft required an investment of nearly $3,000.

While it's not rare to see skins being sold for so much (some people buy them for tens or even hundreds of thousands), it's strange to see people spending over a thousand dollars on a digital skin just because they think it looks like genitals. To put it in perspective, the vast majority of other Kami skins sell for only one dollar, so the 909 model shot up the price by an absurd amount.

I can't help but laugh as a veteran of Team Fortress 2, another Valve game where die-hard traders spend check-sized sums of money on hats just because they have rare magic effects on them. The Golden Frying Pan, the rarest TF2 item that exists, currently sells for $6,750 each. Who has that much money to spend on virtual cosmetics?

The vast majority of skins aren't as expensive as this one, though prices have been gradually increasing over time since Valve announced Counter-Strike 2. This Source 2-focused CS:GO overhaul will arrive in the summer of 2023 with modified smoke grenades, sub-mark updates to servers, visual updates, and more.
