Destiny 2 players have discovered a broken weapon perk. Here's how to abuse it

What you need to know

  • Destiny 2 players have discovered an issue with the Vorpal Weapon Perk that causes certain types of Damage over Time (DOT) to last forever when you switch to a weapon with the perk.
  • Osteo Striga Poison and Strand Unravel work with the issue and stack.
  • Vorpal Weapon also has a beneficial interaction with the Incendiary Advantage. While equipped with Vorpal, enemies that die from Incendiary Scorch DOT will explode with lethal ignitions, whether they have 100 Scorch stacks or not.
  • In addition to raid bosses, the only enemies that this glitch cannot easily kill are Overload Champions (they heal too quickly) and Barrier Champions (their shield stops the glitch if you don't break it quickly).

While Destiny 2 weapon perks have been influenced by glitches in the past, the resulting effects usually do not provide any benefit to players. However, for once, that is not the case, as there is currently an issue affecting a popular PvE perk that will make various forms of difficult content an absolute breeze.

This perk is Vorpal Weapon, and oddly enough, the issue affecting it has nothing to do with the damage boost it provides when shooting a vehicle, champion, boss or guardian using your Super. Instead, it has the ability to break certain types of Damage over Time (DOT) and make them last forever or improve their functionality every time you activate that damage, then pull out a Vorpal Weapon.

For example, if you poison an enemy with the Osteo Striga exotic SMG, then switch to a weapon that has rolled with Vorpal, the poison damage will trigger infinitely until the target dies as long as you keep that weapon equipped. If other enemies are close to the first when it dies, Osteo Striga's Toxic Overload perk will spread the poison infinitely to them too. The damage won't be enough to overwhelm Overload Champions' healing and Barrier Champions will prevent the glitch from working if you don't break their shields quickly, but all other enemies on the battlefield, including bosses, are fair game. Destiny 2 YouTuber Fallout Plays demonstrates how the glitch works in the video below.

This interaction extends to the Unravel effect of certain Unraveling Strand and Rounds builds. Normally, once you unravel an enemy, continuing to damage them creates a swarm of small green projectiles that fly out and hit nearby enemies (or return and damage the original target, if none are around) for a short period of time. However, when you hold a weapon with Vorpal, the Unravel effect lasts indefinitely while your target continues to take damage from something. This includes Osteo Striga's poison damage, meaning you can not only infinitely poison an enemy, but also use this poison to infinitely unravel it and send out infinite harmful Strand Bolts. Poison something with Osteo Striga, unravel it with something like the Warlock's Arc Needle, pull out a Vorpal weapon, and watch everything you fight succumb to an endless DOT.

The Vorpal glitch also affects the Incendiary Advantage, although how it does so is a bit different. Rather than infinitely hitting enemies with Incendiary Scorch's area-of-effect damage, it hits all enemies killed by it with a high-damage ignition, whether they have 100 Scorch stacks or not. This makes clearing add rooms extremely easy, especially if you're using Sun Fragments 3.0 that enhance burning and ignitions like Ember of Char, Ashes, and Eruption.

Unfortunately, the glitch doesn't work with other tick-based damage sources like Le Monarque, Thorn, and Witherhoard, but it's still a fantastic problem to turn to if you're struggling in Nightfalls or Legend and Master Lost Sectors. Strand subclasses with access to Unravel, Osteo Striga, and incendiary weapons are all popular PvE choices right now anyway, and given how common Vorpal Weapon is, you're likely to have spare equipment to roll with.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light is now available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, and PlayStation systems. In it, you'll fight Emperor Calus, gain access to Strand subclasses and their unique abilities, and more.
