TSMC Seeks $15 Billion in the US, But Rejects Restrictions

TSMC plans to invest $40 billion in its Arizona manufacturing complex and is seeking up to $15 billion in funding under the US Science and CHIPS Act. However, the company considers the funding conditions set by the US government to be unacceptable and intends to discuss them with the authorities. The world's largest foundry believes that requiring the factory details to be disclosed and requiring excess profits to be shared will discourage chip makers from building factories in the US, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"Some of the terms are unacceptable and our goal is to mitigate any negative impact of these and we will continue discussions with the US government," said TSMC President Mark Liu at a conference in Taiwan in late March.
